Importing the Management and Leadership National Occupational Standards
To Date Nearly 500 Importations of the Management Standards by Other Standards Setting Bodies and Sector Skills Councils.
We work with a growing number of sector skills councils who are opting to import our standards rather than developing their own in their sector-specific qualifications. This reinforces the demand for portability from managers and the quality assurance that employers are seeking. Dr Kion Ahadi, Head of MSC.
Management and Leadership competencies are crucial to all sectors and occupations within the UK economy. In financial year 2005/2006 SSCs and SSBs imported the generic management units into their own suites of NOS on 66 occasions. For the year 2006/2007 the MSC approved 382 importations!
The top three most popular imported units were;
1. Unit A2 –Manage your own resources and professional development (22 imports);
2. Unit B6 – Provide leadership in your area of responsibility (20 imports);
3. Unit D6 – Allocate and monitor the progress and quality of work in your area of responsibility (16 imports).
The Management Peer Review Group has continued to use the developing expertise of the management and leadership champions to make informed decisions on what constitutes appropriate contextualisation and tailoring of the generic units for sector need (see downloads for further information).
The transparency of this process and the emerging best practice has been welcomed by SSCs and is being explored as a model for possible application in other cross sector areas. The process also has the full support of all the qualifications regulating authorities across the UK and is being promoted by them as an exemplar of good practice.
